Our Programs

Foster care is a system by which a certified, stand-in "parent(s)" cares for minor children or young people who have been removed from their birth parents or other custodial adults by state authority.  Once a child ages out of foster care there is a gap in the system to aid these young adults.  This is where New Journeys Transitional Home steps in to assist these young adults.  In our community, at least 80 young women emancipates from Florida’s foster care system. NJTH will provide enhanced transitional housing to young adult women ages 18 to 24, which have been released from Foster Care and are certified homeless by county social services or other referring agencies. The facility will house no more than four clients for a maximum of eighteen months.

Program Design

NJTH offers a new comprehensive service to address the multidimensional deficits of youth aging out of foster care. It is designed to promote self-sufficiency and independence. This is achieved through a low ratio of case manager to participant. The case managers link participants to local service providers and transportation access. Case managers also coach and train in job applications and completing forms. NJTH provides training in independent living skills and promotes education and/or vocational training for the participants. There is on-going support in the form of groups and individual counseling sessions. To date, we have served approximately 30 young and diverse women whose ages ranged from 18-24 years. Currently, NJTH is housing four young women between the ages of 18-24 years old. Thus far, the women our program has served have shared a few outstanding qualities to include being homeless prior to being admitted into NJTH and having marginal independent living skills. Thus, NJTH met its most elemental objective by housing these young women who would have otherwise been homeless and without the skills necessary to acquire shelter and/or sustainable living.

Community Partners

We have partnered with the Community Partnership for the Homeless, The Charlee Program, Miami Rescue Mission and Switchboard of Miami to make sure they know help is available. These various agencies contact NJTH when they have a homeless young woman age 18 – 24 years old.
